A. Wainwright’s legendary Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells have been best-sellers for the past fifty years. Now, for the first time, a thorough programme of revision and updating, authorised by the Wainwright Estate, has begun. Each volume of the Pictorial Guides will be reissued with maps and text revised to take account of the many changes to footpaths and terrain since Wainwright himself walked the fells.
The revisions have been carried out by Chris Jesty who helped Wainwright with the maps for his last two photographic books.
Chris Jesty trained as a cartographer with the Ordnance Survey. He devised Scafell Pike Panorama, a guide to the view from the highest mountain in England, for which Wainwright provided illustrations. When Wainwright’s health deteriorated, Chris helped him with the maps for his last two large-format books. Shortly before he died, Wainwright said that if ever the Pictorial Guides were to be revised, Chris Jesty should be given the job. Chris Jesty lives in Kendal.
